How to Become a Digital Nomad
“TEACH ANYWHERE, TRAVEL ANYWHERE”
Digital Nomad: defined as someone who is location independent and relies on technology for their job.

This article is a little different to our usual travel-related articles but then again this year has been a little different for everybody!
During the global pandemic and uncertain times, many (like us) had either seen a decrease in work or lost jobs completely. So we wanted to share with you a new venture that we’d started to help with our income.
As we primarily work in the travel sector, at the start of the lockdown our plans to travel for work were either cancelled or postponed. We needed to find a new way of making money but we still wanted to stay self-employed, work remotely and be flexible with our time.
We’ve recently started tutoring online by teaching the English language.
We’ve partnered with The TEFL Org who provide courses on Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Once certified you can teach all over the world, either in a physical classroom or online like us.

Ways to Teach
Companies like Skillshare and Superprof make it easy for you to become a tutor by creating courses for people to attend and learn from. You can create lessons about everything and anything you’re skilled in! So if you’re an expert wildlife photographer, a pro at making sushi or fluent in a language then you can monetise your passion and talents. You can create online courses, set your rate and teach and share your knowledge.
If you don’t feel like you have enough knowledge or skills in a particular field you could try teaching your language. There are so many companies out there that offer teaching roles, and all you need is to be fluent in a language!
Teaching a language
Teaching English online is an easy way of working from home. There are tonnes of companies to choose from. Either teaching a class of students or 1 on 1 or doing ‘Freetalk’ which is where students can ring you to practice their English. Some may want to practice by engaging in casual conversation, others might want help preparing for an interview in English or writing their CV.
Every company requires you to have a strong internet connection. Most then also require you to have a teaching certificate and a neutral British accent.
COMPANIES
Here are a couple of examples of companies that I work for and what they require:
Palfish
Teaching license certified (TEFL or TESOL or any other ESL certificate)
Native English speaker from the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, or Australia

ALO7

The TEFL Org
Most teaching companies require you to have a teaching license such as a TEFL or TESOL certificate. A TEFL certificate is an accreditation that qualifies you for Teaching English as a Foreign Language either online or as a physical teacher in a classroom in many different countries.
Two of the biggest motivations of becoming TEFL qualified it to earn an extra income and to live a flexible lifestyle. Now more than ever people are wanted more flexibility and being able to work from home or abroad.
This is why we’re now teaching online; to earn an extra income around our other work and to be able to work from anywhere. Teaching online had always been our plan as we’d arranged to move abroad at the end of 2020. This obviously hasn’t happened because of lockdown but we’re really glad that we got our qualifications early and starting teaching online prior to moving so that as soon as we can move we’re ready to go and we have work to take with us.
TEFL has a variety of courses to choose from, all you need is to be a native-level speaker of English and have the enthusiasm to learn something new! So if you’d like to start a new career, be more flexible with your time and work from anywhere, then teaching online might be for you!
